Hrafnarstadur Kindred is a Heathen community in Southern California’s Inland Empire. We are a family by deliberate choice—people who have found one another through shared practice, shared values, and a shared love of the old Northern ways. We gather regularly for holidays and ritual, for fellowship and food, for laughter and learning, and for the simple, steady work of building frith over time.
At the heart of our kindred life is relationship: to the land where we live, to those who came before us, and to the Powers we honor. We come together for blóts, sumbles, moots, and family outings—not as reenactors or “Vikings,” but as modern people practicing a living religion. Our goal is simple: to make Heathenry real in our lives, in our homes, and in our community.
What We Practice
Hrafnarstadur Kindred is dedicated to the worship of the Norse Powers and to practicing within a Northern European praxis. In other words: we center our devotional life in the Gods and spirits of the Norse tradition, and we try to keep our ritual practice grounded in a Northern Heathen worldview—one shaped by reciprocity, ancestor-honoring, and right relationship with the unseen and the seen.
While our kindred is primarily Norse-focused, we also recognize something important: Heathenry is not a single standardized religion with one authorized “correct” way to do everything. The historical record itself shows variation, and modern Heathenry contains many sincere approaches and interpretations. We do not see that diversity as a threat—we see it as the sign of a living tradition. We honor our own lane, and we respect others who walk theirs with integrity.
What We Do When We Gather
Our gatherings fall into a few main rhythms:
- Blót: our primary offering rite—giving to the Powers, honoring the Ancestors, and engaging the gifting cycle with reverence and intention.
- Sumbel: a ritual round of toasts, oaths, and spoken words—where we honor the Gods and Ancestors, strengthen our bonds, and speak meaning into the air between us.
- Moots: community time—planning, discussion, learning, mutual support, and the everyday work of keeping a kindred healthy.
- Family outings and seasonal celebrations: because faith isn’t only what happens at the altar—it’s also what happens at the table, in the yard, and in the real lives we share.
Some gatherings are simple. Some are formal. All of them are meant to deepen connection—between people, and between people and the sacred.
Our Values and Our Boundaries
Hrafnarstadur Kindred allows no discrimination on the basis of race, sex, ancestry, age, or ability. Full stop. Our community is built on frith, and frith does not survive where contempt is tolerated. We will not make space for hate, supremacism, harassment, or dehumanization—whether it shows up loudly or quietly.
We are also family-friendly. Children are welcome at our gatherings and may participate in age-appropriate ways. We believe the health of a religion can be measured by whether the next generation can breathe inside it—whether they can feel safe, respected, and genuinely included.
